We live in a small community of about 20 homes, all on 3 to 8 acres. Most of us have come from other parts of the country. Many of us (not me) are retired. We've all been learning about the ups and downs of living in New Mexico together.
Today as I was driving home I noticed our 80+ year old neighbor walking dowm the middle of the road, looking despondant. I stopped to see what was wrong. Now this neighbor and her husband have a world class art collection that is being packed up today and donated to a museum back east. They live in an elegantly designed modern architecture home just across the street. Highly successful. Highly intelligent, but a little frail. So I was concerned to see her so shook up. Turns out that in the midst of the packaging and loading of the artwork, her beloved pug, Emma was missing. Within minutes the neighbors sprang to action! I toured the neighborhood once in my car. I didn't find Emma, but I ran into another neighbor and alerted him to the situation. He immediately cancelled his plans and started to work the arroyo behind his home. (packs of coyotes have been seen roaming in the daylight hours recently and Emma would be no match for them...) I went home to change out of my sandles so I could walk the arroyos as well. When I told Richard, he headed to his pick-up truck to go get his horse, Pecos, to help in the search. I called another neighbor before I headed out and she already knew about missing Emma and was calling other neighbors that might be home to enlist in the search.
Good news was that Emma was found shortly after we had all set out. She had wandered away from the noise and confusion. It turns out that it was just in time. As I made a round trip of the neighborhood back in my car, to let others know that Emma had been found, I spotted two coyotes less than 100 yards from where Emma was rescued.
I love this place and I love my neighbors. They are real neighbors in the true sense of the word. We look out for each other and that is very rare in this day and age.
Oh, and on Sunday, we're having a neighborhood BBQ, just because...
I love your neighborhood, too, and I've never even been there!!
